Sharing the Story of Hunters Helping Communities

During the segment, we had the opportunity to talk about the core mission behind Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger: making sure that donated venison reaches people who need it most.

Across Michigan, hunters harvest deer each year not only for their own families, but also to help others. Through Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger’s network of participating processors and partner food banks, donated deer are processed into ground venison and distributed to food pantries across the state. A single deer can produce 40–50 pounds of lean venison, which translates into approximately 160–200 servings of nutritious protein for families facing food insecurity. It’s a simple but powerful example of how hunters help support their communities while ensuring that harvested game is used responsibly and never goes to waste.

The Role of Processors and Community Support

One of the key parts of the conversation was the role that local venison processors play in making the program work. Hunters donate the deer, but processors handle the skilled work of turning that donation into packaged ground venison ready for distribution.

Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger raises funds to help cover those processing costs. Every dollar raised helps ensure that donated deer can be processed and distributed to food pantries throughout Michigan, turning a hunter’s donation into meals for families who need them.

This partnership between hunters, processors, and community organizations is what makes the program successful.

Helping Us Grow the Mission

Media opportunities like this help us reach new hunters, volunteers, and supporters across Michigan. As awareness grows, more hunters learn about the opportunity to donate deer, and more communities become connected to a reliable source of high-quality protein.

Hunters Making a Difference

At its core, Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger reflects something many hunters already believe: conservation and community go hand in hand. When hunters donate venison, they are not just participating in a hunting tradition — they are helping ensure that Michigan families have access to nutritious, locally sourced food.

We appreciate the opportunity to share that story with the audience of All Outdoors Update, and we look forward to continuing to grow the network of hunters, processors, sponsors, and volunteers who make this program possible.
