You Don’t Have to Hunt to Help Feed Michigan Families

When people hear Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger, it is natural to think first about hunters.

Every fall, Michigan hunters donate legally harvested deer through our network of participating processors. That venison is professionally processed and distributed through food banks, food pantries, shelters, and other hunger-relief organizations in communities across Michigan.

But you don’t have to hunt—or ever step into the woods—to be part of making that happen.

In fact, financial supporters are an essential part of the process.

A Donated Deer Is Only the Beginning

When a hunter chooses to donate a whole deer through Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger, there is no processing charge to the hunter.

But processing the deer isn’t free.

Participating processors put in the time and expertise necessary to turn that donated deer into packaged ground venison ready for distribution. Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger helps cover those processing costs with money raised from individuals, businesses, organizations, and other supporters.

The process works because different people contribute different pieces:

Hunters provide the deer.

Processors turn the harvest into packaged venison.

Food banks and pantries get that venison into their communities.

Financial supporters help make the connection possible.

Take away any one of those pieces and the system doesn’t work nearly as well.

Your Contribution Becomes Food

This is what makes a financial contribution to Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger different from simply putting money into a general cause.

Your support helps us do something tangible.

It helps take a deer that a hunter has already chosen to give and turn it into nutritious protein that can be distributed to people here in Michigan.

A typical donated deer can provide around 40 pounds of ground venison, or approximately 160 servings.

The hunter may have provided the harvest, but it takes others working alongside that hunter to complete the journey from the field to a family’s table.

There’s a Place for Everyone in This Mission

Maybe you don’t hunt.

Maybe you used to hunt but no longer do.

Maybe your freezer is already full.

Or maybe you simply believe that Michigan’s renewable natural resources can be put to good use helping our neighbors.

There is a place for you in Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger.

You can donate financially. You can become a monthly supporter. You can tell someone else about our program. You can introduce us to a business or organization that wants to help.

And, of course, if you hunt, you can donate a deer.

These aren’t separate missions. They’re different parts of the same one.

Help Us Get Ready for This Fall

Michigan’s deer seasons are approaching, and hunters across the state will soon begin bringing donated deer to participating processors.

We want to be ready when they do.

Financial contributions help Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger cover processing costs and keep the deer donation network working throughout the season.

You don’t need a hunting license, a deer tag, or a place to hunt to help.

You just need to believe that a resource Michigan already has can be used to help feed our neighbors.
