One Deer. One Community. More Than 140 Meals.

One Deer. One Community. More Than 140 Meals.

A single deer may not seem like much when you look at the scale of hunger across Michigan.

But follow that deer from the field to a local food pantry, and its impact becomes much easier to see.

Through Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger, one hunter’s harvest can become more than 140 meals for Michigan families.

And it all starts with one decision:

Donate the deer.

It Starts With a Michigan Hunter

A hunter harvests a legally taken deer and decides there is more value in donating it than adding it to an already-full freezer.

Instead of taking the deer home, the hunter brings the field-dressed deer to a participating Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger processor and lets them know it is being donated.

For a whole-deer donation through MSAH, there is no processing cost to the hunter.

That makes it simple for hunters to turn an extra deer into something their community can use.

Then a Local Processor Goes to Work

The processor is the critical link between the hunter and the family who ultimately receives the venison.

The deer is professionally processed, ground, packaged, frozen, and prepared for distribution.

Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger raises funds to reimburse participating processors for this work, helping keep whole-deer donation free for hunters while supporting a network of processors throughout the state.

The result is lean, locally harvested ground venison ready to move into Michigan’s hunger-relief network.

From the Processor to a Local Food Pantry

Once processing is complete, the venison doesn’t travel halfway across the country.

It goes into the network of food banks, food pantries, shelters, and other hunger-relief organizations serving Michigan communities.

That is one of the things that makes this program special.

A deer harvested in Michigan becomes food for people in Michigan.

During 2025 alone, Michigan hunters working through MSAH donated more than 1,100 deer, helping distribute tens of thousands of pounds of venison to food pantries across the state.

But those statewide numbers all begin the same way:

One deer at a time.

More Than 140 Meals From One Decision

MSAH estimates that each donated deer can provide more than 140 meals when the venison is used in dishes such as chili, soups, stews, casseroles, tacos, and skillet meals.

Think about what that means.

One hunter.

One deer.

One trip to a participating processor.

And potentially more than 140 meals for people who could use the help.

Multiply that decision by hundreds—or thousands—of hunters across Michigan, and the impact becomes substantial.

It Takes More Than a Hunter

The hunter may start the process, but getting that venison onto a family’s table takes a community.

Hunters donate their harvest.

Processors turn that harvest into packaged venison.

Financial donors and sponsors help pay the processing costs.

Food banks and pantries put the venison into the hands of the people they serve.

Each part of that network matters.

Remove any one of them, and the deer may never complete the journey from field to family.

What Part Will You Play?

There are several ways to be part of this effort.

If you’re hunting this season and have a deer to spare, consider donating it.

If you don’t hunt—or simply want to help make more deer donations possible—financial contributions help Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger reimburse participating processors and expand the program.

Support Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger →

And if neither of those options fits, you can still help by sharing our mission with Michigan hunters, businesses, organizations, and communities.

Because feeding Michigan families doesn’t begin with a massive program.

Sometimes it begins with one deer.
