A Donated Deer Isn’t Free: What It Takes to Turn a Harvest Into Meals
When a Michigan hunter donates a whole deer through Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger, there is no processing cost to the hunter.
That is an important part of our program. We want hunters who have an extra deer—or who intentionally harvest one for donation—to be able to turn that deer into food for their neighbors without worrying about the processing bill.
But that doesn’t mean processing the deer is free.
Someone still has to turn that field-dressed deer into safe, professionally packaged venison ready for a food pantry.
And that’s where financial donors become an essential part of the process.
What Happens After a Hunter Donates a Deer?
A donated deer is only the beginning.
Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger works with participating wild game processors across Michigan. After a hunter drops off a whole deer, the processor does the skilled work necessary to turn that harvest into food.
That includes:
- Receiving and handling the donated deer
- Processing and grinding the venison
- Packaging it for distribution
- Freezing and storing the finished product
- Preparing it for pickup by food banks, food pantries, shelters, and other hunger-relief organizations
A single donated deer can produce roughly 40–50 pounds of lean venison, providing approximately 160–200 servings of protein.
But getting from deer to dinner requires real work, equipment, packaging, freezer space, electricity, and skilled labor.
Hunters Donate the Deer. Financial Donors Help Finish the Job.
This is one of the things people sometimes misunderstand about Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger.
The hunter provides an incredibly valuable resource.
The processor provides the expertise needed to make that resource usable.
And financial supporters help make it possible for those two pieces to come together.
Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger raises money to help reimburse participating processors so whole-deer donation can remain free for hunters.
That means when someone makes a financial contribution to MSAH, they aren’t simply making a general charitable donation.
They’re helping turn a Michigan deer into food.
The More Deer Hunters Donate, the More Processing We Need to Fund
We want more hunters to donate deer.
We want more processors participating in the program.
And we want more Michigan communities to have access to donated venison.
But growth also creates a simple reality:
Every additional deer donated has to be processed.
If hunters donate more deer, we need the financial resources to process more deer.
That’s why hunters and financial supporters are both essential to the mission.
One provides the harvest.
The other helps make sure that harvest reaches a family’s table.
You Don’t Have to Hunt to Be Part of the Harvest
Maybe you don’t hunt.
Maybe your freezer is already full.
Maybe you simply believe that locally harvested food should be put to good use helping people in Michigan communities.
You can still play an important role.
Your donation helps Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger work with processors across the state to turn donated wild game into nutritious food for families who need it.
The hunter may provide the deer.
Your contribution can help turn it into meals.
